MODERN WOMAN FORD

It's been evident from the offset that there's something special about noisy London outfit Modern Woman, and there is - Sophie Harris, an enigmatic vocalist and musician who certainly knows how to create an atmosphere. We're blown away by their newest single 'Ford' a sludgy story that expertly combines elements of seemingly disparate elements of folk and noise music. Ghosts of the Birthday Party and early Patti Smith haunt the track, paired with modern production courtesy of Oli Barton-Wood (who's worked on pieces for Porridge Radio, Nilufer Yanya, Obongjayar and more). The menacing bass line deserves a special mention as Harris explains: “‘Ford’ has been one of the oldest songs in our repertoire...I wrote the bass line loop for it a long time ago, one day when I only had a bass to hand. I structured the song and added guitar and simple vocal. I wanted to give it a raw and slightly sinister feel to it...Lyrically, it is about a girl who borrows her brother's Ford and drives it around. For Juan’s vocals towards the end of the song, I went with a William Burroughs-esque cut up technique and collected different car-related writings, chopped them up and reformed them.” Listen and watch the equally excellent video directed and produced by Sandra Ebert here now. -Holly Mullineaux
